Artist:Nobuyuki Tanaka(Japan)
Title:Tactile Memory

Tanaka’s works made with dry-lacquer techniques are created in the image of vessels, tactile sensations, skin, the body, blood, life, and the primordial, as evoked by the lacquer. Through the creation of these works, Tanaka ponders the fundamental connections between nature, the universe, humans, life cycles, and regeneration. He believes that making them in Oku-Noto, where the craft of lacquer has been passed down since the prehistoric Jomon era, is deeply meaningful when considering lacquer culture (i.e., the relationship between lacquer and humanity). Awakening memories of places and people who lived here, he will create a space where lacquer works quietly on the viewer.

He creates three-dimensional works with dry lacquer, making use of the skin feeling and membrane-like properties evoked by the lustrous texture of lacquer. The works covered with lacquer film exist in space as if they are alive, taking in the light and the surrounding scenery, presenting a unique world of art.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1989, he has presented his works at numerous exhibitions, winning the 14th Takashimaya Cultural Foundation Takashimaya Art Award in 2003 and the 18th MOA Mokichi Okada Grand Prize in 2012. His works are housed in museums both in Japan and abroad.
Recent major exhibitions from 2018 to 2019 include “NOBUYUKI TANAKA―Urformen Primordial Memories― (Kaiserslautern Museum, Muenster Lacquerware Museum/Germany), “GO FOR KOGEI 2021” (Natadera/Ishikawa Prefecture, etc.), Hubei International Lacquer Triennale 2023 (Hubei Museum of Art/China), etc., and he has participated in the Oku-Noto International Art Festival since its inception.
